If Dan Fanelli’s new campaign ad isn’t a blatant example of islamophobia, I don’t know what is.
It’s not even just that I’m struggling to believe that this can be real and serious - but I’m close to no longer believing America can be real and serious. How… can this be on television? Just - how?
Continuing the theme of dull depressing American political fools, I just encountered Sarah Palin talking about how the founding fathers wanted American laws to be made according to Christian teachings. That woman just keeps getting better and better. I always had certain fond feelings towards the founding fathers for their non-Christian/outright-atheist natures - but then who am I to argue with the Alexandrian-library/Wikipedia-sized mass of knowledge that is Ms Palin? Surely soon enough we have to run out of things for right-wingers to appropriate and twist.
It’s times like these I wish George Orwell were alive. Although, if you tried to write these particular American politicians into a work of fiction I get the feeling the average reader wouldn’t be able to believe it - they transgress those bounds of sheer plausibility. No suspension of disbelief possible when facing such attitudes. It is all disbelief. And, what’s more, it’s disbelief-is-the-only-hope kind of disbelief. Because, otherwise - if you don’t turn away from the story when the characters and plot-lines get this ridiculous - if you can believe they might actually exist in this reality - then what kind of reality is that we’re living in?
Personally I may prefer 1984. Although, my Room 101 would then be filled with Fox News playing on a loop. Ah, I would be too easily undone.
